Advertising Disclosure
Last updated: August 4, 2026 — revised to reflect the auto-ads-only current state (AdSense pending approval, no manual placements yet)
Tank Logic is a 100% ad-supported aquarium resource. Every guide, calculator, and species care sheet on this site is free for you to use, and we never charge a subscription, sell a product, or accept affiliate commissions. Our only revenue source is display advertising — served through Google AdSense today, with the goal of upgrading to Mediavine as the site grows. This page explains in plain English how that advertising works, what data is involved, and the choices you have over what you see.
How Tank Logic Makes Money
Display advertising is exactly what it sounds like: brands pay an ad network (Google, in our case) to show their ads on websites like this one. When you visit a page on Tank Logic, the ad network auctions the available ad slots in real time, the highest bidder wins, and their ad is displayed. We are paid based on a combination of impressions (how many times the ad is shown) and clicks (how many times a visitor clicks through). The exact mix depends on the campaign the advertiser is running — some pay per view, some pay per click, some pay per conversion on the advertiser's own site.
Because we are paid by the ad network rather than by any brand, we have no financial incentive to recommend one product over another. We don't write sponsored content, we don't accept paid placements, and we don't link to specific retailers for a commission. The guides and calculators are written solely based on what we believe is best for the reader.
Where Ads Appear on the Site
Right now, Tank Logic uses Google AdSense's auto-ads feature exclusively. Auto-ads means we do not manually place ads on the page — instead, Google's script analyses each page's layout and dynamically inserts ads where it predicts they will perform best for viewability and revenue, without overlapping content or breaking the design. You may see ads appear at the top of an article, between paragraphs of a guide, beside the calculator inputs, or (on desktop) in the sidebar — the exact placement is decided by Google's machine-learning model on each page load, and may differ between visits, devices, and even between users.
We have not yet added any manual ad placements. The reasons are deliberate: AdSense is currently pending approval on the site, and we want to see how auto-ads performs in terms of revenue, viewability, and impact on Core Web Vitals before layering in fixed placements. Once AdSense is approved and we have a baseline of data, we will selectively add manual placements in the highest-viewability positions (typically a leaderboard above the calculator inputs and a rectangle between the input and results stages on tool pages) and compare their performance against the auto-ads baseline. Any manual placements we add will be designed to meet Mediavine's technical requirements from day one, so the eventual transition to Mediavine will not require a layout rework.
What we will never do, regardless of which ad network is running: pop-ups, pop-unders, interstitials that block content before a user can read it, autoplay video ads with sound, sticky bottom bars that cover content on mobile, or any placement that pushes the calculator inputs below the fold on a phone. The aquarium hobby is full of impatient readers who came to get a number fast — intrusive ad formats would hurt engagement, raise bounce rate, and ultimately reduce ad revenue, which is the opposite of what ads are supposed to do.
AdSense, Mediavine, and Our Roadmap
Tank Logic's advertising roadmap has three stages:
- Stage 1 (current): AdSense auto-ads, pending approval. The AdSense script is loaded on every page; once Google approves the site, auto-ads will begin serving impressions automatically. No manual placement work is required on our end — Google handles everything. Revenue per thousand impressions (RPM) is typically low at this stage ($1–$5 RPM for aquarium/niche hobby content) but it gives us a baseline and confirms the site is monetisable.
- Stage 2: AdSense auto-ads plus selective manual placements. Once we have 30–60 days of auto-ads data, we will add manual ad placements in the highest-viewability positions — typically a leaderboard above the calculator inputs, a rectangle between input and results on the tool pages, and a sidebar ad on desktop. Manual placements usually outperform auto-ads in fixed high-viewability positions, but auto-ads is still useful for filling the long-tail pages where manual placement isn't worth the effort. Expected RPM at this stage: $3–$8.
- Stage 3: Mediavine. Once Tank Logic reaches Mediavine's minimum threshold of 50,000 sessions per month, we will apply for Mediavine — a premium ad management network that handles direct ad sales, header bidding, and layout optimization on our behalf. Mediavine typically delivers 2–4× the RPM of AdSense alone. The page layouts on this site are already designed to meet Mediavine's technical requirements (sufficient content per page, fast load times, mobile-first responsive design, no autoplay video, no pop-ups), so the transition should be seamless — Mediavine swaps in their own ad code where AdSense was running.
This staged approach is the standard playbook for independent publishers. Trying to jump straight to Mediavine without first proving the site can earn via AdSense is risky — Mediavine's application review looks at traffic quality and existing ad performance as signals of long-term viability. Building the AdSense baseline first makes the Mediavine application stronger.
What Data Do Ads Collect?
When you visit a page with ads, the ad network (Google) may set or read cookies in your browser to determine which ads to show you. This may include:
- A random advertising ID used to recognize your browser across visits and serve more relevant (or frequency-capped) ads.
- Approximate location data, usually derived from your IP address, down to city or region level. This is used to show ads for local businesses, fish stores, or aquarium clubs near you.
- Contextual signals from the page you're reading — for example, that you're on a guide about betta fish care, so an ad for betta food might be more relevant than a generic pet ad.
Tank Logic itself does not collect personally identifying information about you for advertising purposes. We do not sell your data, and we do not share your data with third parties beyond what is strictly required for ad delivery and basic traffic analytics. Our full Privacy Policy covers what little data we do collect and how long we keep it.
Your Choices — How to Opt Out or Personalize Ads
You have full control over ad personalization and ad-related cookies. Here are the most common ways to manage your ad experience on Tank Logic and other websites:
- Google Ads Settings — visit google.com/settings/ads to opt out of personalized advertising, reset your advertising ID, or see why specific ads were shown to you.
- Browser-based opt-out — install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or use a privacy-focused browser like Firefox or Brave that blocks third-party trackers by default.
- AboutAds — for industry-wide opt-out across all participating ad networks, visit aboutads.info/choices. This sets an opt-out cookie that respected networks honor.
- Ad blockers — we don't penalize ad-block users. If you prefer to use uBlock Origin, AdGuard, or any other ad blocker, the calculators and guides on this site will continue to work normally. We rely on visitors who choose to support us by allowing ads, not on forcing ads on those who don't want them.
Why We Don't Use Pop-ups, Autoplay Video, or Sticky Bottom Bars
The aquarium hobby is full of impatient readers who came to a calculator to get a number fast. Interrupting them with a full-screen pop-up or an autoplaying video ad would hurt engagement, raise bounce rate, and ultimately reduce ad revenue — the opposite of what ads are supposed to do. The placements we use (top-of-article, in-content between calculator steps, and a sidebar that doesn't follow on mobile) are the ones Mediavine itself recommends because they balance viewability with user experience. Fast pages earn more per impression than slow pages full of intrusive ads.
A Note on Editorial Independence
Because advertising revenue is not tied to any specific product or brand recommendation, the editorial content on Tank Logic is fully independent. A guide can say "this filter is overpriced, buy a cheaper one" or "don't keep goldfish in a bowl" without any commercial consequence. We do not allow advertisers to preview, edit, or approve content before publication, and we do not run sponsored articles. If we ever do run a clearly labeled sponsored post in the future, it will be marked as such at the top of the article, in line with FTC endorsement guidelines.
Updates to This Disclosure
We may update this Advertising Disclosure from time to time — for example, when we transition from AdSense to Mediavine, when we add a new ad placement, or when privacy regulations change.
