Tank Setup

The Crystal Red Shrimp (Caridina loggi, formerly classified as Caridina sp. “Crystal Red”) is the premium shrimp of the freshwater hobby — a striking red-and-white banded bee pattern that does not exist in the wild. CRS is in fact a colour morph of the wild bee shrimp (Caridina loggi, native to soft acidic streams in southern China), selectively bred in Japan from a single mutant individual discovered in 1996 by Hisayasu Suzuki. Every Crystal Red Shrimp alive today descends from that one shrimp. They are smaller, slower-growing, and dramatically more demanding than Neocaridina; they are not a beginner shrimp.

Water parameters: temperature 18–22°C (cooler than Neocaridina, which tolerate 18–26°C), pH 5.5–6.5, hardness 3–6 dGH, KH 0–2. That range is narrower than Neocaridina by half — CRS tolerate pH swings of less than 0.4 units without stress, and a single water change with mismatched parameters can trigger a molt crash that kills half the colony. This is why almost every serious CRS keeper uses remineralised RO water: tap water in most of North America and Europe is too hard (GH 8–20) and too alkaline (pH 7.4–8.4) for CRS. I run my CRS tank at 21°C, pH 6.0, GH 4, KH 1 — RO water remineralised with Salty Shrimp Bee Mineral GH+ over ADA Amazonia substrate — and the colony breeds steadily.

Set up the tank with an active substrate (ADA Amazonia New, Fluval Plant Stratum, or Mr. Aqua Soil) that buffers pH low — inert substrates (sand, gravel) cannot maintain pH 6.0 long-term, and CRS in alkaline water stop breeding, fade in colour, and die within months. Add driftwood, Indian almond leaves (which release tannins and antibacterial compounds CRS seem to benefit from), Java moss (essential — CRS shrimplets are tiny and need the microscopic food Java moss hosts), and low-light plants like Anubias and Java fern. A sponge filter is mandatory — CRS shrimplets are small enough to be sucked into any Hang-on-back or canister intake. A chiller or a fan blowing across the surface is often necessary in summer; CRS die at sustained temperatures above 26°C.

Tank Mates

Crystal Red Shrimp are peaceful, slow-moving, and small enough (2.5–3 cm) that almost any fish can eat them. The realistic options are a shrimp-only tank, or a tank shared with other Caridina species (Crystal Black Shrimp, Tiger Shrimp, Tangerine Tiger) that need the same soft acidic water. The classic CRS-only tank is 10 gallons with a colony of 10–20 shrimp and no fish at all — this is what most serious CRS keepers run.

Compatible tank mates: other Caridina species with overlapping water parameters (Crystal Black Shrimp, Golden Bee Shrimp, Tiger Shrimp), small peaceful snails (Sulawesi snails are too warm; Nerite snails work but the larvae need brackish to reproduce so they will not overrun the tank; Ramshorn snails are fine), and Ottocinclus (the only fish I would put in a CRS tank — they stay small, are purely herbivorous, and ignore shrimp). Avoid all other fish, including small tetras and rasboras — CRS shrimplets are 1–2 mm at hatch and even Ember Tetras will pick them off.

Do not mix CRS with Cherry Shrimp (Neocaridina). They will not interbreed (different genera), but their water parameter needs are opposite: Cherry Shrimp want harder, more alkaline water (pH 6.5–8.0, GH 4–15); CRS want softer, more acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, GH 3–6). One tank cannot satisfy both, and whichever species is living outside its preferred range will stop breeding, lose colour, and die early. Pick one species per tank. The same rule applies to mixing CRS with other Caridina colour morphs — CRS and CBS (Crystal Black Shrimp) are the same species and will interbreed, producing mixed-pattern offspring that are difficult to grade and sell.

Diet & Feeding

Crystal Red Shrimp are omnivores and biofilm grazers. In a mature, well-cycled tank with active substrate and Indian almond leaves, they will spend all day picking at surfaces for microscopic food. Supplement 2–3 times per week with a high-quality shrimp food (Bacter AE, Shrimp King, Mosura Specialty Food, or Ebita Breed) and occasional blanched vegetables (spinach, kale, zucchini). Indian almond leaves (catappa leaves) are not just decoration — they release tannins, humic acids, and antibacterial compounds that CRS actively graze on as the leaf softens and decays.

Portions matter. CRS are small and slow eaters; a single pellet per 10 shrimp is plenty, and uneaten food should be removed after 4–6 hours (not 24 hours like with Neocaridina) — rotting food in a CRS tank will spike ammonia fast because the biofilter is sized to a smaller bioload. Overfeeding is the single most common cause of CRS colony crashes; underfeeding is rarely a problem in a mature tank with active substrate. Feed a varied diet — a rotation of shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables, and the occasional frozen bloodworm or BBS treat produces better colour and faster growth than any single food.

Calcium matters for molting, but CRS need less of it than Neocaridina because their water is softer. Maintain GH at 3–6 dGH using a shrimp-specific remineraliser (Salty Shrimp Bee Mineral GH+, Mosura Mineral Plus Ultra) — do not use crushed coral or cuttlebone, which dissolve too fast and push GH above the CRS comfort zone. Active substrate (ADA Amazonia) contains enough trace minerals to support molting for the first 6–12 months; after that, the substrate is exhausted and you either replace it or rely entirely on the remineraliser. Watch for failed molts — in CRS they almost always indicate GH too low (below 3 dGH) or water parameters swinging too fast.

Common Health Issues

Crystal Red Shrimp are sensitive to almost everything — ammonia, nitrite, copper, temperature swings, pH swings, even rapid changes in GH. The single most common cause of CRS deaths is parameter shock from a water change done too fast or with mismatched water. Always drip-acclimate new shrimp over 2–3 hours, and do water changes of 10–15% weekly rather than 30–50% monthly — smaller, more frequent changes are safer than large ones. If your tap water parameters shift seasonally (some cities switch sources in summer), pre-mix and age your water for 24 hours before using it.

CRS are extremely sensitive to copper and to many common medications. Never dose copper-based medications, never use insecticides or air fresheners in the same room, and double-check every plant fertiliser for copper content. Even shrimp-safe fertilisers should be dosed at half the label rate in a CRS tank — CRS are more sensitive than Neocaridina to almost every dissolved compound. Bacterial infections (visible as white or cloudy patches on the body, sometimes called 'muscle necrosis') are common in stressed CRS and are essentially untreatable — remove and isolate affected shrimp immediately, and address the underlying water quality before more shrimp are lost.

Grading matters for both health and value. CRS are graded C, B, A, S, and SS based on the proportion and quality of white coverage: C-grade has mostly red with thin white bands; B-grade has more balanced red and white; A-grade has thicker white; S-grade is mostly white with thin red bands; SS-grade is almost entirely white with thin red pinstripes. Higher grades are more expensive (a single SS-grade shrimp can cost $40–$100), more sensitive to water quality, and harder to keep — the higher the white coverage, the more prone to molting problems and bacterial infection. Start with B-grade or A-grade shrimp for your first CRS colony; SS-grade is for experienced keepers with stable, matured tanks. Lifespan is typically 1.5–2 years.

Breeding

Crystal Red Shrimp breed in freshwater (unlike Amano Shrimp, which need brackish). Females carry eggs under their abdomen for 3–4 weeks, fanning them constantly. When the eggs hatch, fully-formed miniature adults emerge — no larval stage — and immediately start grazing. There is no parental care beyond the female carrying the eggs; shrimplets are on their own from hatch. CRS breeding is slower than Neocaridina: a female produces 15–25 shrimplets per brood (vs 20–30 for Cherry Shrimp) and may only produce 4–6 broods in her lifetime (vs 8–12 for Cherry Shrimp).

Sexing: females are larger, deeper-bodied, and have a curved 'saddle' of developing eggs visible through the back of the carapace when ready to breed. Males are smaller, slimmer, and shorter. A colony of 10–15 shrimp with both sexes will breed indefinitely if water parameters are stable. CRS reach sexual maturity at 4–5 months (vs 3 months for Cherry Shrimp) and produce a brood every 5–7 weeks. The single biggest trigger for breeding is a small (10%) cool water change — dropping the temperature 1–2°C for a day simulates a rainy season and reliably triggers moulting and mating.

CRS shrimplets grow slowly — 1 cm takes 3 months (vs 6–8 weeks for Cherry Shrimp). They need microscopic first food for the first two weeks; Bacter AE, powdered shrimp food, and the biofilm on a mature active substrate are all suitable. Java moss is non-negotiable — it hosts the infusoria and microorganisms that newly-hatched shrimplets graze on. Grading offspring is a multi-generational project: breeding two S-grade shrimp produces a mix of grades (roughly 25% S, 50% A, 25% B/C), and improving the line requires culling (removing) low-grade offspring each generation. Many keepers maintain a separate 'cull tank' for B and C grade shrimp and either sell them cheaply, give them away, or use them as feeders. This is normal and necessary if you want to maintain or improve the grade of your colony over time.
