How Much Substrate Does Your Aquarium Actually Need?
Substrate is the foundation of every aquarium — not just visually, but functionally. It anchors plants, hosts the bulk of your biofilter's beneficial bacteria, buffers water chemistry in some setups, and provides behavioural enrichment for bottom-dwelling species like corydoras, loaches, and cichlids. Buying too little means a thin, unstable layer that plants won't root in and that fish can dig down to bare glass. Buying too much means wasted money, displaced water volume, and a deep anaerobic zone that can develop hydrogen sulphide pockets. The right amount is a function of three variables: tank footprint, desired depth, and the bulk density of the specific substrate you're using. This calculator handles all three.
The volume calculation is straightforward geometry: volume = length × width × depth. In inches, that gives cubic inches; in centimetres, cubic centimetres. The calculator converts both to litres (1 litre = 61.0237 cubic inches = 1000 cubic centimetres) so the result is consistent regardless of which unit you enter. The depth you choose depends on the tank's purpose: a fish-only tank typically runs 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm), a planted tank 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) for root development, a Walstad method dirted tank uses 1 inch of soil capped with 1–1.5 inches of sand or gravel, and cichlid tanks often go 3+ inches to allow digging behaviour. The weight calculation is where most aquarists (and most substrate calculators on the internet) get the answer wrong. Substrate is sold by weight, not by volume, but the conversion depends on the substrate's bulk density — the mass per unit volume including the air gaps between grains. Bulk density is very different from particle density (the density of the solid material itself) because substrate is roughly 35–45% air by volume. The calculator uses these published bulk densities: coarse gravel at 1.5 kg/L (12.5 lb/gal), pea gravel at 1.55 kg/L (13 lb/gal), play sand at 1.6 kg/L (13.4 lb/gal), pool filter sand at 1.55 kg/L (13 lb/gal), aquasoil (ADA Amazonia-style) at 1.0 kg/L (8.4 lb/gal), Flourite at 1.3 kg/L (10.9 lb/gal), and dry potting soil at 0.5 kg/L (4.2 lb/gal). The differences are large enough to matter: a 2-inch bed in a 55-gallon tank needs about 90 lb of gravel but only 60 lb of aquasoil — a 50% difference in both weight and cost.
The most common mistake new aquarists make is using the "1 pound of gravel per gallon" rule of thumb. That rule works approximately for a 2-inch bed in a typical 4:2:1 ratio rectangular tank, but it breaks down badly for non-standard footprints. A 20-gallon long (30×12 inches) needs about 32 lb of gravel for a 2-inch bed; a 20-gallon tall (24×12 inches) needs only 26 lb. Same volume, different footprint, 23% difference in substrate needed. Always calculate by dimensions, not by tank volume. The second most common mistake is forgetting to add a slope — most aquascapers mound substrate higher at the back for visual depth, which can add 20–30% to the total substrate required versus a flat bed at the front depth.
A practical note on buying. The calculator returns the mathematically exact weight needed, but you should always buy 5–10% extra to account for substrate settling into crevices between rocks and driftwood, the inevitable spillage during installation, and a small reserve for top-ups later as the bed compacts. Substrate is heavy — a 55-gallon tank with a 3-inch gravel bed needs about 140 lb of gravel — so plan your transport accordingly. Many online retailers sell 20 lb or 25 lb bags, which means a 140 lb order is six or seven bags. If you're buying aquasoil, which is significantly lighter, the same volume ships as four or five 9-liter bags.
