How Much Substrate Does Your Aquarium Actually Need?

Substrate is the foundation of every aquarium — not just visually, but functionally. It anchors plants, hosts the bulk of your biofilter's beneficial bacteria, buffers water chemistry in some setups, and provides behavioural enrichment for bottom-dwelling species like corydoras, loaches, and cichlids. Buying too little means a thin, unstable layer that plants won't root in and that fish can dig down to bare glass. Buying too much means wasted money, displaced water volume, and a deep anaerobic zone that can develop hydrogen sulphide pockets. The right amount is a function of three variables: tank footprint, desired depth, and the bulk density of the specific substrate you're using. This calculator handles all three.

The volume calculation is straightforward geometry: volume = length × width × depth. In inches, that gives cubic inches; in centimetres, cubic centimetres. The calculator converts both to litres (1 litre = 61.0237 cubic inches = 1000 cubic centimetres) so the result is consistent regardless of which unit you enter. The depth you choose depends on the tank's purpose: a fish-only tank typically runs 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm), a planted tank 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) for root development, a Walstad method dirted tank uses 1 inch of soil capped with 1–1.5 inches of sand or gravel, and cichlid tanks often go 3+ inches to allow digging behaviour. The weight calculation is where most aquarists (and most substrate calculators on the internet) get the answer wrong. Substrate is sold by weight, not by volume, but the conversion depends on the substrate's bulk density — the mass per unit volume including the air gaps between grains. Bulk density is very different from particle density (the density of the solid material itself) because substrate is roughly 35–45% air by volume. The calculator uses these published bulk densities: coarse gravel at 1.5 kg/L (12.5 lb/gal), pea gravel at 1.55 kg/L (13 lb/gal), play sand at 1.6 kg/L (13.4 lb/gal), pool filter sand at 1.55 kg/L (13 lb/gal), aquasoil (ADA Amazonia-style) at 1.0 kg/L (8.4 lb/gal), Flourite at 1.3 kg/L (10.9 lb/gal), and dry potting soil at 0.5 kg/L (4.2 lb/gal). The differences are large enough to matter: a 2-inch bed in a 55-gallon tank needs about 90 lb of gravel but only 60 lb of aquasoil — a 50% difference in both weight and cost.

The most common mistake new aquarists make is using the "1 pound of gravel per gallon" rule of thumb. That rule works approximately for a 2-inch bed in a typical 4:2:1 ratio rectangular tank, but it breaks down badly for non-standard footprints. A 20-gallon long (30×12 inches) needs about 32 lb of gravel for a 2-inch bed; a 20-gallon tall (24×12 inches) needs only 26 lb. Same volume, different footprint, 23% difference in substrate needed. Always calculate by dimensions, not by tank volume. The second most common mistake is forgetting to add a slope — most aquascapers mound substrate higher at the back for visual depth, which can add 20–30% to the total substrate required versus a flat bed at the front depth.

A practical note on buying. The calculator returns the mathematically exact weight needed, but you should always buy 5–10% extra to account for substrate settling into crevices between rocks and driftwood, the inevitable spillage during installation, and a small reserve for top-ups later as the bed compacts. Substrate is heavy — a 55-gallon tank with a 3-inch gravel bed needs about 140 lb of gravel — so plan your transport accordingly. Many online retailers sell 20 lb or 25 lb bags, which means a 140 lb order is six or seven bags. If you're buying aquasoil, which is significantly lighter, the same volume ships as four or five 9-liter bags. How much substrate do I need for my aquarium?

For a standard 2-inch (5 cm) substrate bed in a rectangular tank, multiply the tank's length × width × 2 inches and divide by 231 to get US gallons of substrate volume. Then multiply by the substrate's bulk density (about 12 lb/gal for gravel, 13 lb/gal for sand, 8 lb/gal for aquasoil) to get the weight needed. This calculator does all of that automatically, including the conversion between imperial and metric units.

How deep should my aquarium substrate be?

For a fish-only tank, 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of gravel or sand is sufficient. For planted tanks, 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) allows proper root development. For Walstad method dirted tanks, 1 inch of soil under 1–1.5 inches of sand or gravel cap is standard. Cichlid tanks often use 3+ inches to allow digging behaviour. Shrimp-only tanks can run as shallow as 0.5 inches. Going deeper than 4 inches risks developing anaerobic pockets that produce toxic hydrogen sulphide gas.

How many pounds of gravel per gallon of tank water?

A rough rule of thumb is 1 pound of gravel per gallon of tank water for a 1-inch-deep bed in a typical rectangular tank. For a 2-inch bed, that's 2 lb/gal. However, this varies significantly with tank footprint — a 20-gallon long (30×12 inches) needs more gravel than a 20-gallon tall (24×12 inches) for the same depth. Always calculate by dimensions, not by tank volume. The rule breaks down completely for non-rectangular tanks and for tall column tanks.

Should I buy more substrate than the calculator recommends?

Yes, add 5–10% extra to account for substrate settling into crevices between hardscape, slight mounding at the back of the tank for aquascaping slope, and the inevitable spillage during installation. Buying exactly the calculated amount almost always leaves you short. Better to have a spare bag for top-ups later than to run out mid-installation and have to wait a week for a re-order.

Can I use this calculator for a Walstad dirted tank?

Yes — for a Walstad tank, run the calculator twice: once with the soil layer (use "dry potting soil" at 0.50 kg/L) and once with the cap layer (use play sand or pea gravel). How does substrate affect my tank's water volume?

Substrate displaces water equal to its own volume (not its weight — the air gaps don't count). The calculator shows the gallons of water your substrate will displace, which is critical for accurate medication dosing and stocking calculations. A 2-inch gravel bed in a 55-gallon tank displaces about 4 gallons of water — meaning your "55-gallon" tank actually holds about 41 gallons of water once you account for substrate, hardscape, and the air gap at the top.

Why does the calculator ask about back-slope?

Most aquascapers mound substrate higher at the back of the tank to create visual depth. A typical back-slope adds 25% to the total substrate required versus a perfectly flat bed at the front depth. If you're planning a Dutch-style or Iwagumi-style aquascape with significant slope, check the slope box; if you're just laying a flat bed for a fish-only tank, leave it unchecked.

Is play sand safe for aquariums?

Yes, but it must be unwashed play sand (not polymer-coated), and it should be rinsed thoroughly before adding to the tank — expect to rinse 5–10 times until the water runs clear. Play sand compacts more tightly than pool filter sand, which can develop anaerobic pockets in deep beds; limit play sand depth to 2 inches unless you stir it monthly. Pool filter sand is more expensive but easier to rinse and less prone to compaction.
