Tank Setup
Stiphodon gobies (Stiphodon atropurpureus and related species) are small, suction-mouthed gobies from fast-flowing streams in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. They are adapted to cool, highly-oxygenated water and genuine current. A 20 gallon long tank with a powerhead is the realistic minimum; a standard community tank will slowly suffocate them.
Water parameters: temperature 20โ24ยฐC (cool room temperature is ideal โ they suffer above 26ยฐC), pH 6.5โ7.5, hardness 5โ12 dGH. The non-negotiables are flow and oxygen: they need a powerhead creating visible surface agitation. Still water will kill them within weeks.
Set up the tank with smooth river stones, slate stacked to create crevices, and a bare or fine-sand substrate. Plants are optional โ Anubias and Java fern attached to hardscape survive the current; stem plants will not. The key is to create surfaces they can cling to: smooth rocks with a thin film of algae are what they actually want. A tight lid is essential โ they climb glass and escape through any gap.
Tank Mates
Stiphodon gobies are peaceful with other species but territorial with their own kind. Males establish small territories on choice rocks and display to rivals. The standard setup is 1 male with 1โ2 females; two males in a 20 gallon will fight unless there are multiple visual barriers.
Compatible tank mates: Hillstream Loaches (similar habitat), White Cloud Mountain Minnows (cool-water overlap), Zebra Danios (at the cool end of their range), Cherry Shrimp, Amano Shrimp, and Nerite Snails. The cool, fast-flowing water they need is the limiting factor โ most tropical community fish cannot share it.
Avoid: tropical species that need 26ยฐC+ (the goby will slowly suffocate), aggressive bottom-dwellers (cichlids, large catfish), and other gobies that compete for the same niche. Do not house with fish large enough to eat a 5 cm goby โ they are slow-moving and easy targets for predators.
Diet & Feeding
Stiphodon gobies are primarily herbivorous grazers. In a mature tank they spend all day rasping algae and biofilm off smooth surfaces. In a new tank with little algae, supplement heavily with algae wafers, blanched zucchini, cucumber, and spinach.
Feed once daily in the evening. Drop an algae wafer near their favourite resting rock; they will find it within minutes. Avoid heavy protein diets (bloodworms, brine shrimp) โ they cause digestive issues in this species. They are not carnivores despite the goby label.
A healthy Stiphodon should have a slightly rounded belly. If yours looks hollow, the tank doesn't have enough algae and you need to feed more vegetables. They are slow eaters and will lose out to faster fish at feeding time โ feed after lights-out when other fish are inactive.
Common Health Issues
The single biggest killer of Stiphodon gobies is warm, low-oxygen water. If the tank is above 24ยฐC, they will gasp, refuse food, and decline over weeks. The fix is always the same: lower the temperature and add a powerhead. They cannot be kept in a standard tropical tank.
Wild-caught specimens are often in poor condition when imported โ they are collected from remote streams and the supply chain is long. Acclimate new arrivals very slowly (drip acclimation over 2+ hours) and consider a quarantine tank with extra algae and biofilm. Many wild-caught Stiphodon simply starve to death in the first month; buy from suppliers with a good reputation.
Lifespan is typically 3โ5 years in a properly set up hillstream tank. They are sensitive to copper and many medications โ always research compatibility before treatment. Standard quarantine is 4 weeks (longer than most fish) because of the importation stress.
Breeding
Breeding Stiphodon gobies in the home aquarium is rare. They are amphidromous โ larvae hatch in freshwater, drift downstream to the sea, develop as marine larvae, then return to freshwater as juveniles. This life cycle cannot be replicated in a home aquarium.
Spawning itself is straightforward โ males display on rocks, females lay adhesive eggs in crevices, males guard the eggs. The eggs hatch in 24โ48 hours into larvae that need brackish/marine water to develop. Without the marine larval stage, all fry die within days.
Some dedicated keepers have raised fry by collecting newly-hatched larvae and transferring them to a brackish tank with marine microplankton (rotifers, phytoplankton) for the first 3โ4 weeks, then gradually returning them to freshwater. This is specialist breeding, not a beginner project. Captive-bred Stiphodon are essentially unavailable in the hobby.
